Empowering Earthquake Survivors

Over 33,000 Individuals Benefit from GIZ’s Comprehensive Cash Response Programme

In the wake of devastating earthquakes, the Community-Based Local Initiatives Project (CLIP 2), co-funded by the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), has launched a comprehensive Cash Response Programme. Aimed at providing crucial aid, this initiative has reached over 6,900 households, impacting more than 33,000 individuals among refugees and host community members alike.

The programme stands as a testament to the resilience and collaborative spirit of the affected communities, offering more than just financial assistance—it offers hope. Through the Civil Society Network for Peer Support and Localisation (ADA Türkiye), and in partnership with SGDD-ASAM, RASAS, and IBC, the Cash Response Programme delivers immediate relief in regions including Adana, Hatay, Kilis, and others, fostering individual empowerment and community resilience.

The transformative power of this initiative is vividly captured in the story of Emeni Dedo, a beneficiary whose life was significantly changed by the programme. Facing displacement and health challenges, Emeni’s found encouragement and support that positively influenced her life. “The Cash Response Programme was more than relief; it was our strength,” Emeni stated. “Covering health and housing, it helped us stand strong and hope for a brighter future. This support transformed our lives.” The programme not only addressed Emeni’s immediate needs but also provided a foundation for focusing on future pursuits.

Building on this success, with the support from the EU, CLIP 2 plans to introduce Cash2Lift Education Assistance in Fall 2024, an Education in Emergencies (EiE) Response initiative aiming to reach over 6,000 children. This new modality of unconditional and unrestricted cash support underscores the project’s commitment to comprehensive crisis response and long-term community empowerment.

bout the CLIP 2 Project

The CLIP 2 project, co-funded by the European Union and the BMZ and implemented by GIZ, addresses the multifaceted challenges faced by Türkiye’s refugees and vulnerable host community members, made worse by the Covid-19 pandemic and the 2023 earthquakes. With Türkiye hosting the world’s largest refugee population, the need for expansive support services is unique.

CLIP 2 supports community-based initiatives, particularly in underserved areas, providing a wide range of services to enhance protection, support non-formal education, promote social cohesion, and empower local actors. This project exemplifies the synergy within the ADA Türkiye network, utilising a mentoring approach to reinforce localisation efforts and strengthen the socioeconomic and psychological resilience of the communities served.

Through its holistic approach and commitment to the Humanitarian-Development-Peace Nexus, CLIP 2 aims to create a lasting impact, building long-term resilience, and empowering communities to lead their own development. The project embodies the essence of localisation in crisis response, ensuring culturally sensitive, rapid, and sustainable interventions.
