Ayşe is a five-year-old child diagnosed with mild Phenylketonuria (PKU), a genetic metabolic disorder that can lead to brain damage, developmental delays, speech disorders and permanent neurological complications if not properly treated.
For Ayşe, the regular and uninterrupted use of the medication is critical for managing the condition. Doctors have emphasized that failure to follow the treatment plan could lead to irreversible health complications and serious risks to her well-being.
Ayşe lives with her mother and her mother’s uncle. One of the biggest challenges for the family is maintaining the strict low-protein diet required for Ayşe’s condition. Consuming regular protein-rich foods could disrupt her metabolic balance and lead to severe health risks.
With the help of ADA Türkiye partner Young Lives Foundation, Ayşe received special low-protein food supplies for four months. This support was coordinated through different institutions, and regular household visits were conducted to monitor the child’s living conditions and dietary practices.
Ayşe’s medical follow-up has also been carefully managed. Hospital appointments were scheduled together with the family, interpretation services were provided during medical visits, and paid blood tests were secured through the support of partner institutions.
Medical evaluations have shown visible improvements in Ayşe’s metabolic indicators as a result of the low-protein diet and medication support.
This comprehensive intervention has made a significant difference in Ayşe’s life. Her metabolic balance has been maintained, the risk of serious complications has been reduced, and access to regular healthcare has been strengthened.
Co-financed by the European Union Humanitarian Aid (DG ECHO) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and implemented by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), ADA Türkiye was established in 2021 to ensure long-term coordination and sustainable cooperation. To date, the initiative has reached over 120,000 people through protection services, provided earthquake-related assistance to approximately 31,000 individuals, and implemented over 3,000 activities to promote social cohesion between communities.
