Sulukule Volunteers Association (SGD)

Project completed

Sulukule Volunteers Association has been carrying out rights-based and empowering activities with disadvantaged groups in Fatih/Karagümrük region of İstanbul since 2010. It works extensively with children and women, but also with schools, school administrators and teachers in the district. Operating in the area for more than a decade, SGD has established a bond of trust with its target group and local stakeholders.

About the project

The overall objective of the project is to empower children at risk through psychosocial activities, increase their access to services, provide legal support and facilitate social cohesion.

The project targets children at risk in Fatih/Karagümrük district, among them particularly refugee children and women. Activities will be carried out in mixed groups with participants from the host and refugee communities, with a focus on intercultural exchange, social cohesion, psychosocial and legal support, and games for children where learning through play is dominant. In addition, efforts will be made to raise awareness and functionality of access to local and national services to ensure sustainability.

Workshops with children and caregivers, homework/academic support for children, psychological counselling for children and women, legal counselling, referrals, field outreach work to identify the (possibly) out of school children and implement efforts in collaboration with schools and teachers, school registration and follow-up
